Cork’s first over 85-year-old received his shots from his GP on Wednesday morning.
A total of 36 vaccines arrived at Link Road Medical Center in Ballincollig on Wednesday, which saw all of its patients over the age of 85 vaccinated.
Dr Maria Horgan said there are 100 more vaccines expected in the next delivery, and another 300 afterwards.
Dr Horgan said she was “absolutely delighted” to see her patients get vaccinated and it was “nice to see all the smiles on people’s faces”.
“We had a lot over 90 and it was so beautiful because we haven’t seen these people for over a year and a lot of them haven’t been outside for over a year. ‘neither a year, ”she said.
Speaking about preparing for the vaccinations, she said it was “a lot of work” but those at the medical center “are delighted with the way it went.”
To prepare for vaccine distribution, staff had to complete an educational course on the vaccine and how it is transported through a series of webinars over the past few weeks.
The staff had to participate in an online educational course and also the practical administration.
Dr Horgan said the medical center portal designed to allow people to remotely access their GP, gogp.ie, has been “extremely helpful”.
The platform allows patients to book their Covid-19 vaccination appointment following an invitation from the medical center via SMS, as well as links to HSE consent forms and vaccine FAQs which, according to Dr Horgan , is “very easy to read for all kinds of abilities”.
“The patients consented before their appointment, and then we get this consent list with names and dates of birth and go through it. It’s a lot of preparation but it works really well and there was a huge sigh of relief.
“I think it’s great to have patients come into their own practice, there is confidence there. They know they are seeing their own doctor and they also have peace of mind there.
“These people have not been out of their homes for a year so there is some hesitation, but we are absolutely delighted with how everything has gone so far,” she said.
