The Broomfield Bird Club hosts Hannah Jakob of the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (Barr Lake) on Tuesday for her free monthly Zoom presentation. Jakob will talk about “Waterfowl 101”, starting at 7 p.m.
“Bird watchers of all skill levels are welcome and this will be a great reminder for anyone planning to bird watch this spring,” Jakob said. “I will go over the general characteristics of waterfowl and the different groups of birds that make up waterfowl. This will be a more in-depth look at the different species we will encounter here in Colorado and how we can identify them. I will describe the different methods of identification and what to look for when both in flight and on the water. My hope is to familiarize the public with our common waterfowl and give them the tools to make their own identification in the future.
Jakob, who is an environmental educator at the Bird Conservancy, is also an Americorps member serving the BCR. She is also an artist and illustrator.
Jakob grew up in Missoula, Montana where she developed a passion for wildlife and environmental conservation. She graduated from Soka University of America in 2021 with a BA in Environmental Studies. Jakob loves to paint and for her graduation thesis she studied ‘art’ as a tool for wildlife conservation by creating a tool with her own scientific illustrations. She enjoys sharing her appreciation for birds and all things natural with the people around her and looks forward to sharing and exploring with schools and families in the Denver area.
Broomfield Bird Club is a social club, open to anyone interested in learning more about birds and their habitats. We are an all-volunteer board of directors and registered as a not-for-profit organization. Our annual dues are $20 per family, which is primarily used for speakers and to support local bird-related rehabilitation centers. Presentations are held every second Tuesday of the month (with exceptions) and bird walks every second Saturday of the month, with intermittent bird walks whenever someone wishes to lead.
