- Baby Rishita was born three months prematurely, weighed only 650 grams
- “I admitted it because the family was poor and it was a girl”, says the doctor
- With specialists and a dedicated nurse, baby Rishita now weighs 2.5kg
Nalgonda, Telangana: Born almost three months prematurely, baby Rishita weighed only 650 grams – “as much as my (cell) phone” is how her doctor described her. Five months later, she is ready to go home – a healthy 2.5kg baby.
âEven I didn’t expect her to survive,â admits Dr. Damera Yadaiah, playing with Rishita, a baby he’s immensely proud of. He is right to be.
Despite all the horrific stories of neglect, lack of infrastructure and apathy in public hospitals, doctors and nurses in Nalgonda, a backward neighborhood in Telangana, have shown that it is possible to work miracles with babies. low birth weight. Rishita, their latest case, is a record for the country.
When she was brought in, the hospital refused to admit her, having little hope that she would survive.
âI’m not supposed to admit newborns weighing less than 1.2 kg. But her parents were very poor and she was a girl, âsaid Dr Yadaiah. He decided to take her in, fearing that his parents would take him to another private tertiary care unit.
âI was shocked that the family practically abandoned her the first week. I had to call them and talk to them, âhe said.
But a few days of professional and dedicated care worked by magic.
Although he only has four nurses for 24-26 babies at a time, the doctor decided to dedicate one to take care of Rishita. “In just a few days, when she wrapped her hand around my pinky finger, I knew it was a survivor.”
But a lot of work had been done to make the baby normal and healthy – including mother kangaroo care and specialists who helped. âShe is developing normally, her hearing and vision are normal. As you saw, she was smiling at you,â he said.
The family say the doctors and nurses worked a miracle. Grandmother Mallamma is upset. âThey took care of her like real mothers, even more than we could imagine. How else can a baby weighing half a kg survive? And then they taught us kangaroo care. I did not know that if you tie the baby on the chest it can help a lot.
Mamtha, the child’s mother, said she had given up hope. But the doctors had advised her, asking her to be positive and take good care of the baby.
âThe doctor said great people like Einstein, Picasso and Ambedkar were all premature babies and my daughter can become like that too. So I gained confidence in myself, âshe said.
